The Senior Accountant is a mid-level professional capable of fulfilling the project accounting and project forecasting requirements of multiple mid-sized projects or a singular large project, including day-to-day interface with project management, client and contractor personnel, while overseeing and developing junior level accounting staff.

The Senior Project Accountant will report to the Business Unit Controller and will be responsible for the overall project financial management and assist in the oversight of the project accounting team, including, but not limited to, project financial forecasting, risk management, managing contracts, amendments, insurance, accounts receivable and accounts payables, project cash flow, accruals, deferred and unbilled revenue, and project files. This position requires three (3) to five (5) plus years accounting experience working in the construction industry.

  • Ensure timely updating, production and analysis of reports

  • Oversee monthly project forecast and review opportunity/risk.
  • Adapt Gilbane systems to a non-typical Owner system
  • Working knowledge of contracts, general conditions and flow down language
  • Proficient in excel. Use of CMIC, Textura, Microstrategy and Concur preferred
  • Write all forms of professional correspondence



  • Ensure project financial forecast is formatted and set up to meet both internal and client reporting needs
  • Follow up with all projects to meet the posting deadline.
  • Coordinate monthly project financial forecast review meeting with Project and Regional Management team, including the meeting time/location, and obtaining key reports and data necessary to conduct a productive review. The senior project accountant should be able to lead and control the meeting in the absence of the Business Unit Controller (BUC).
  • Reconcile the project budget to the contract and fully executed change orders. Reconcile proceed budget changes to fully executed OCO’s. Ensure that all documents are signed by authorized representatives. If a control weakness is noted, address it immediately with BUC and project management.
  • Complete a detailed review of Change Management ensuring that all exposures are accurately stated, i.e. OME and Tradecontractor quotes are reasonable or realistic. In addition, the timeliness of information in the log should be reviewed and an action plan should be developed if corrective action is necessary.
  • Complete a detailed review of the general condition and if warranted adjust the estimates to complete. The general conditions labor cost should be tied to the project staffing and overall project schedule (updated). Regional support labor should be carried in the forecast and managed by the operations project team, and if budget overruns are estimated, the overrun rationale will be established.
  • All data will be entered in the project control system, including details to each estimate to complete, by the accountant and engineer. The report will be reviewed by the accountant for accuracy prior to distribution to regional cost accountant. A summary narrative of any significant change will accompany each report.
  • Ensure all allowances and alternates are accounted for in CMIC, and understand how to maintain and track allowances
  • A monthly review meeting will be conducted with owner and project team, explaining and reviewing cost projections, outstanding changes, etc.
  • Conduct monthly review of month end Work in Place (WIP) process and take corrective action where needed.



  • Ensure requisition process is well defined and agreed upon with the client, based on contract terms and conditions, including billing format, submittal date, and payment date, etc. A project specific payment flow chart to be created.
  • The trade contractors should be clearly instructed on Gilbane/Owner billing requirements, including schedule of values breakdown, waivers, stored materials, material status reports, insurance, bonding etc. Strict adherence to formal submission requirements should be emphasized to ensure timely billing on a monthly basis.
  • Prior to submission to the owner, ensure accuracy and appropriateness of charges.
  • If necessary establish a monthly requisition review meeting with the owner and if necessary, the lending institution. Give the client timely responses in writing to any questions in regards to the charges in the requisition.
  • Ensure that Gilbane and the Tradecontractors are paid in accordance to the contractual requirements, and Gilbane policy.
  • Reconcile project billings to corporate A/R reports.
  • Reconcile deferred revenue or unbilled cost revenue to billings on a monthly basis. All variances should be researched and corrected prior to the next requisition.  


  • Prior to processing any payment the accountant will ensure the following:
    • Proper review and approval by project management is obtained. Monitor the progress of the monthly draws, and collaborate with project team to ensure timely approval and cost accruals for month end process. If the accountant feels any part of the project team’s review is not completely adequate, they should question the team and/or physically review the percentage complete, materials, change order etc.
    • Ensure all necessary waivers, insurance, signed contracts and amendments, bonds, consent of surety etc. are in place. Complete review of these documents should be completed to ensure compliance to Gilbane/Owner requirements.


  • BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field
  • 8-10 years with CM or General Contractor organization working on $15M or larger construction projects
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Proficient in CMiC
  • Understanding of the overall project execution process, including budgeting, project forecasting, cost control, schedule, anticipated cost and project profitability
